Good value for an individual plan

I was looking for a decent vision plan that wouldn't break the bank and found VSP Direct. I signed up for the Standard Individual Vision Plan. The frame allowance of $150 was enough for me to get a nice pair of designer frames without having to pay much out of pocket. It felt like a good deal overall, especially since I paid annually and got a small discount. The WellVision Exam was also completely covered. It definitely felt worth the money I spent.

Decent coverage, some limitations

I chose VSP Direct for their Standard Individual Vision Plan. The WellVision Exam was covered, which was great. The allowance for Prescription Eyeglasses helped a lot with new frames and single vision lenses. However, I found that upgrading to Photochromic Lenses still left a bit of an out-of-pocket cost that was higher than I anticipated, even with the coverage. The network of doctors is large, but sometimes it's a little tricky to find one that's super close and has immediate openings. Overall, it's a solid plan, but be sure to read the details on specific lens upgrades.

Easy to sign up

Getting vision coverage through VSP was pretty straightforward. I picked the Premium Vision Plan because I wanted good contact lens coverage. It was easy to enroll online, and finding a doctor in their network was simple too. The whole process went smoothly, and I didn't run into any snags. Got my new contacts without any fuss.

So happy with my new glasses!

Oh my goodness, I am just delighted with VSP Direct! I joined the Premium Vision Plan and it was the best decision. I got new prescription eyeglasses with progressive lenses and an anti-reflective coating, and everything was covered so well. My eye doctor was in their network, which was super convenient. I absolutely love my new glasses and the process was so much easier than I expected. I'm telling everyone about this! I will definitely keep this plan next year!

how long after signing up can i actually use my benefits? is there a waiting period for new plans?

C Carly Lindqvist 2 months ago
Depends on the plan you pick. Some have no waiting period, others might have a short one, especially for things like frames. Mine was immediate for exams but a month for glasses.

Most of the time you can use it pretty quick, like a week or two. Never had a super long wait myself.

Hey, does VSP do any discounts for AARP members? My grandma is looking for a vision plan.

D Derek Hughes 2 months ago
Yep, they absolutely do! My mom used her AARP discount when she signed up for her plan last year. It was a decent saving.

I think so. I'd tell her to check their site or call, but I'm pretty sure AARP is one of the groups that gets a special rate.

Thinking about getting a VSP plan. Do they actually cover both glasses and contacts in the same year or do you have to pick one?

K Kevin 2 months ago
Yeah, you can totally get both. I got new glasses and then like six months later ordered contacts and both were covered under my plan. Just depends on your allowance.

It's usually one or the other with your main allowance, but sometimes there are separate rebates or smaller allowances for the other. Check the plan details cause it varies.

I saw some stuff about VSP having an online store called Eyeconic. Is that like, included in the plan or is it separate?

M Mike 2 months ago
Eyeconic is their online store. You can definitely use your benefits there, it's pretty convenient. I usually buy my contacts from there.

Yeah, it's integrated. Your allowances apply directly when you checkout, makes it super easy to use your frame or contact benefits.

Anyone know if VSP is good for LASIK? Like, do they cover a decent chunk or is it just a tiny discount?

B Brett 2 months ago
They do offer some coverage or discounts, but it's not like they pay for the whole thing. It's more of a benefit than full coverage, afaik.

I looked into it last year, they had some special pricing through certain providers. It wasn't a huge amount off, but better than nothing.
